When people search for dog bones, they mean two very different things: raw or cooked marrow bones from the butcher, or edible chews made for the purpose. The difference matters for your dog's safety.
Cooked bones are widely discouraged by vets because they become brittle and can splinter into sharp pieces that can injure the mouth, oesophagus and gut or get stuck. Chews that are produced and dried to be chewed and digested are a far more controllable way to give your dog the same urge to chew and the same occupation.

How often and how long your dog may chew
A chew is a source of energy, not just play. That means it counts towards the dog's total daily intake, and you should cut back on the meal or the other treats on a day with a larger bone.

Always chew under supervision
No matter how safely a chew is produced, your dog should not chew without supervision. The most frequent risk is not the bone itself, but that the dog swallows too large a piece once it has become small and slippery from saliva.
Keep an eye on the last remnant, and remove it when it has become so small that it can go down whole. Give only one bone at a time, so you can see how the dog chews that particular type. And make sure there is always fresh water next to it, so your dog can drink along the way.
